CIPP (content, input, process, product) is a useful evaluation tool that I applied to an innovative learning plan I developed for a different education technology course. The plan was designed to address the challenge that language learners face of speaking before their language is “perfect” or “good enough” by their own subjective standard. Thus, using a machine learning powered app called SuperChinese, students are able to practice speaking, learn vocabulary, and improve pronunciation. I applied CIPP to this plan on the whiteboard below. (It is best explored on Canva.)

Utilizing the whiteboard allowed me to organize the different parts of CIPP and the salient questions. This is a particularly valuable exploration as there is space to expand and add new thoughts, given that the plan has not yet been enacted. The whiteboard offers space to organize the evaluation in a way that is easily digestible and customizable.

Optional Exploration: As you explore this creation, consider how you might organize an evaluation before implementing an intervention to prepare you. Does this way of organizing thoughts appeal to you? What makes more sense to your brain?

Although my plan has not yet been implemented, applying the CIPP framework asks important questions, and provides direction for what to look for as the lesson happens. Some of the evaluation criteria is measurable, but some of it requires qualitative data. Considering CIPP ahead of time prepares me to notice elements that will be critical to understanding the results of the learning plan.
